PARTS OF PLANT USED IN AROMATHERAPY AND ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HEALTH & WELLNESS
Essential oils can be in all the various parts of a plant including the seeds, bark, root, leaves, flowers, wood, balsam, and resin. Different parts of plants often contain quite different active ingredients. Essential oils are extracted directly from the bark, flower, fruit, leaf, seed, or root of a plant or tree (1a).

Plant Part To Produce Essential Oils
The fleshy or woody roots of many species are used medicinally. Roots may be fibrous, solid, or fleshy.
A bulb is a fleshy structure made up of numerous layers of bulbs scale, which are actually leaf base, eg. onion, garlic.
The bark is the outer protective layer of a tree trunk, formed by layers of living cells just above the wood itself. A high concentration of active ingredients is found in bark, eg. Quinine bark, pepper bark, oak bark, willow bark.
Thick stems or woods itself are used, for example, Sandalwood.
Leaves include stems, for example, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Patchouli, Rosemary.

Seeds are contained within a fruit, for example, Coriander, Cardamom, Celery Seeds.

THE CHEMISTRY BEHIND OF ESSENTIAL OILS
Once you understand the chemistry behind essential oils, you’ll be able to use them safely and more effectively.
Everything around us, from the air you breathe to the clothes you wear, is made up of different substances. Substances consist of tiny particles called atoms, which are made up of even tinier particles called electrons, protons, and neutrons. Chemistry studies substances at this tiny, atomic level (2).
There are a lot of different types of atoms, and how many electrons, protons, and neutrons an atom has determines what element it is. The atoms making up these elements have different numbers of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Altogether, there are 118 different elements, all with unique combinations of protons, neutrons, and electrons (3).
What’s a Molecule?
When two or more atoms linked together, it creates a molecule. Water, for example, is a molecule. You’ve probably heard it referred to as H2O, because it has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom linked together (4).
Essential Oils Chemistry
We focus on organic chemistry when it comes to essential oils. Organic chemistry is the study of molecules that have carbon in them. If a molecule has carbon, it’s considered an organic molecule. Carbon gets a lot of attention because it’s so good at building molecules (5).
The different molecules found in essential oils are what give them their therapeutic value and aroma. The chemical makeup of an essential oil affects how the oil interacts with your body.
Each essential oil also has a different number of molecules. Wintergreen, for example, is almost entirely made up of one kind of molecule called methyl salicylate. Spikenard, on the other hand, has hundreds of different molecules (6).
Few people truly appreciate the complexity of essential oils, particularly the oils that contain hundreds of molecules. Too much or too little of any given molecule can affect the aroma and properties of the essential oil (7).
Essential oils are filled with all different kinds of compounds. What these compounds have in common is that they’re volatile. Volatile means that a substance can change from a liquid to gas really quickly.
Essential oils are organic compounds extracted from plants with tremendous healing properties. There are eight compounds in essential oils, i.e alcohols, acids, aldehydes, ketones, esters, phenols, sesqui turpines, and turpines. Chemistry in Plants
No two plants will produce essential oils with the exact same chemistry. Even two plants from the same species will have variations in their chemical composition. Many things can affect the chemical makeup of essential oil, including the region the plant was grown in, the time and season it was harvested, and the quality of the soil.

Essential Oil Chemotypes
The growing environment can impact a plant so much that it produces a totally different chemical composition. Two plants can have the same genus and species but diverge within the species into different sub-species, which scientists call chemotypes.
Even though two plants look and grow the same, inside their chemistry is so different that they’re categorized as a different chemotype. The chemotype of essential oil is important because it can influence its effectiveness and safety (11).
HOW ESSENTIAL OILS ARE MADE?
The process of turning a plant into an essential oil is called extraction. Effectively separating an essential oil from its plant is not quite as simple as squeezing an orange peel in your hand or crushing a mint leaf.
The extraction of essential oils from plants is as much an art as a science. Yes, you need the right equipment to produce high-quality essential oil.
Distillation is a process that involves separating a substance into its constituent parts, based on boiling points of volatility (14).
When the leaf, flower, root, or bark is exposed to high temperatures, the aromatic molecules hidden inside of it are released. And because they’re volatile, they quickly change to their gaseous state.
A good distiller knows exactly how to get all the compounds out without altering them, giving the finished essential oil its potent benefits.
Oils can be distilled in a few different ways. The most common extraction method is steam distillation because it yields exceptionally pure and clean products.
Distillation and cold pressing are two methods used to create essential oils. Cold-pressing and oil begin with grinding the plant into a paste. A tool is used to crush the paste, allowing for the release of the oil. It is typically used to produce citrus oils for extracting essential oils from rinds and peels of citrus fruits, for example, bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, and tangerine.
Steam distillation is one of the most common forms of producing essential oils. Steam distillation is suitable for the production of most essential oils except those from delicate flowers. Steam plays a role in rupturing the plant’s membranes which aid in the release of the essential oil. Steam enables the essential oil to rise to the top of the condenser. The oil that emerges is the essential oil.
Essential Oil Adulteration
Robert Pappas, Ph.D., chemist and the founder of Essential Oils University, told Dr. Eric, Z during his interview for his first Essential Oils Revolution that he estimates more than 75% of all the essential oils on the market are adulterated. Meaning, they are either diluted or contaminated with synthetic materials (12).
Purity and adulteration are extremely important topics when considering which ones to buy.
Adulteration is the addition of any natural or synthetic component (cheaper essential oil, vegetable oil, mineral oil, essential oil component, etc.) that would cheapen the price of the oil. Not only do adulterations have the potential to alter the chemical and physical properties of the oil, but they can decrease the efficacy of the oil and even cause adverse effects (13).
If you use an oil that has been adulterated, contaminated, or loaded with synthetic fillers, you will not receive the full natural benefit of the plant. And in some cases, low-quality oils can even be dangerous and pose serious threats to your health.

TIPS ON BUYING AND STORING ESSENTIAL OILS
When purchasing essential oils, you must treat them as you would your favorite perfume or cologne. Store them in a cool, dark place. This action will help to reduce the risk of the oils breaking down as a result of exposure to heat and sunlight.
While you may be tempted to purchase your oils online, take some time to research the seller. Not all essential oil brands are of high quality. Some products are of poor quality and will not provide you with the desired therapeutic value of the finest oils.
Grades Of Essential Oils
There are four grades of essential oils.
Grade A essential oils are of therapeutic grade. They are organically grown, steam distilled, unadulterated, and safe for internal use. It is important to note that there are those who deem the use of the term therapeutic as being a “made-up” term because no governmental agency certifies an oil as being therapeutic (13a).
While no governmental agency certifies these oils, there is a plethora of scientific research that supports the value essential oils have for health and wellness.
For an oil to be therapeutic, you need hundreds of pounds of the plant material to create it. These oils are extremely concentrated and costly to make and they are the grade needed to reap their health benefits.
Pure essential oil is 70 times more powerful than herbs, so they’re really potent! Pure means that there are no contaminants or fillers. Potent means each plant was grown in a part of the world where that plant grows best, resulting in the absolute best chemistry for that plant.

Grade B: Food Grade Essential Oils
Grade B essential oils are of a food grade. They contain pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and fungicides. Only 5% of the oil has to be composed of essential oil to receive the label of being a pure essential oil.
Grade B essential oils are not safe for internal use. Although they may have the label of food-grade, you should not assume this means they are appropriate for consumption or internal use. Rather, they are it is still a best practice to use these oils as an aromatherapy agent.
Grade C: Perfume Grade Essential Oils
Grade C essential oils are perfume grade and therefore, are used in perfumes. They contain alcohol, pesticides, and chemical solvents. Only 5% of the oil has to be composed of essential oil to receive the label of being a pure essential oil.
Grade D: Floral Water
Grade D essential oil is floral water. They are of low quality and are a by-product of the distillation process.
Synergistic Oil Blends
Synergistic oil blends are a combination of healing oils that promote healing properties. You have the option of using them in baths and vaporizers.
EFFECTIVENESS OF ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils are composed of very small molecules that can penetrate your cells. Essential oils can penetrate our cell membranes and can enter our bloodstreams within 30 seconds of application (14).
The essential oil compounds can even cross the blood-brain barrier. They differ from fatty oils like vegetables or nuts that come from large molecules because they cannot penetrate your cells, so they are not therapeutic in the same manner.
One drop can have powerful health benefits. They are more potent than herbs and are well-known for their anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiviral properties. They are typically created through the process of distillation, which separates the oil and water-based compounds of a plant by steaming.
Some essential oils are soothing, toning, and grounding, while others are energizing, warming, and renewing but all essential oils are natural. The variety of essential oils allows you to naturally and effectively maintain health and address your specific health concerns.
HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils can be absorbed into the bloodstream when inhaled, which is done through the blood vessels located in the lungs. A diffuser is a good option for aromatically absorbing essential oils. You can diffuse any of your essential oils and receive their many benefits like reduced stress, improved mood, better focus, and much more. You can also place some drops into a diffuser with 3-4 different essential oils.
This method is the simplest, where you inhale any oil directly from the bottle (15). You can also soak a cotton ball with the oil and leave it in your purse to inhale all day.
Another method is steam inhalation, which involves placing a few drops of oil in a bowl of steaming water, placing a towel over your head and breathing in the vapors that way.
Placing several drops of any oil in a hot preferably salted with Epsom salts bath or into your shower basin provides for an aromatic and healing experience.
Diluting an oil in distilled water in a spray bottle and then spraying on linens, clothes, etc. are both fantastic ways to gently receive the beneficial properties of the more potent oils.
Diffusion Via Electronic Devices
There are a number of commercially made devices that deliver oil through electronic diffusers and nebulizers that work in your home, office, or car, and there are even diffusers that work via USB ports.
The main difference between ultrasonic diffusers and nebulizers is that the former uses water to disperse an essential oil, therefore, diffusers also double as humidifiers. They use less essential oils than nebulizers, but the nebulizer gives you a much stronger concentration of essential oils.
Diffusers typically cost less than nebulizers, but nebulizers are able to cover a lot more square footage depending on the model and use an atomizer technology.
This method can be achieved simply by placing 10-15 drops of the chosen oil in a bowl of hot water that has been salted with either Epsom salts or sea salt, which help with the diffusion process throughout the night.
Other ways of achieving this method are by the commercially made terra cotta bowls that are designed specifically for diffusing essential oils, or by soaking a cotton ball in the oil of your choice and placing it by your bed overnight.
Essential oils can be absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream for you to reap their many healing benefits (16). You can either rub the essential oils yourself on the affected area or, if you’d prefer, there are many lotions, body washes, and shampoos made with essential oils in them that you could use as well.
You could also put essential oils in your bath by dropping them on a sponge and placing the sponge in the bathwater with you. Be sure to only use the essential oils as indicated by the bottle, as overusing could become a problem.
Almost all essential oils must be diluted with a carrier oil, such as Fractionated coconut oil before applying them to the skin without the risk of burns. This method is ideal for massage or dabbing the blend onto your wrist, neck, or other parts of the body.
If you’re applying essential oils topically, you should test first, by applying a small amount of the diluted oil on your wrist to test for any adverse reaction. This is especially important for those with highly sensitive skin.
Diluting with a carrier oil is important as some oils, such as peppermint, wintergreen, citrus oils, clove, oregano, and others can cause burns if applied directly to the skin.
Ingestion is another good option for absorbing your essential oils, however, you must be sure to do your research first. Certain essential oils, like oregano and clove, shouldn’t be taken orally like this for more than a week and should be diluted before ingestion, but oils like lemon and peppermint are fine to be taken as one to three drops in water.
It’s becoming fairly trendy to make your own items containing essential oils to reap their benefits in your own way. For example, you could make candles or bar soap containing a combination of essential oils and other good things and reap the benefits when you use the soap, absorbing the oils in your skin, or burn the candle and inhale. You could also make shampoos, toothpaste, household cleaners, body butter, bug spray, lip balm, and more.
