Frankincense is an oil I will never be without.  I apply it to areas of pain and inflammation, taken it internally to strengthen my immune system, blend it with other oils into a diffuser for energy, adding to my skincare routine, applying for my daughter’s blemished skin and apply for my parents’ painful joints.

WHAT IS FRANKINCENSE?

A beautiful small tree or shrub with abundant pinnate leaves and white or pale pink flowers, Frankincense yields a natural oleo gum resin that is collected by making incisions into the bark.  Its essential oil is collected from the resin through steam distillation.

Frankincense is also known as Boswellia. It has been regarded as a holy oil in the Middle East for centuries. It has been used for the act of anointing individuals and is well known biblically as one of the gifts given to Christ at his birth.  The word Frankincense appears 17 times in the Bible New Testament.  In ancient times, Frankincense was valued above gold because of its used to support health and wellness in a wide range of individuals and circumstances.

Frankincense has always been in high demand and history tells us many fascinating things about how ancient cultures used it.

For thousands of years, religious followers hand used Frankincense during worship, meditation, and spiritual practices.  The Babylonians and Assyrians would burn Frankincense in religious ceremonies and the ancient Egyptians used Frankincense resin for everything from perfume to salves for soothing skin. This centuries-old knowledge contributes to the modern uses of Frankincense essential oil today.

Ayurvedic medicine, in practice for centuries, uses frankincense for wound healing, female hormonal issues, arthritis, and air purification.

Frankincense

Frankincense oil is produced from the resin of the Boswellia sacra tree. The resin of a tree is a sap-like substance with a high viscosity.

The Resin From a Tree

For centuries, the resin of the tree has been obtained by slashing or making an incision into the tree, which then emits large amounts of resin. After the resin secretes from the tree, it is then scraped off or collected as it drips onto the ground. From there, the resin is delicately distilled and essential oils are extracted. 1https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/spotlight-frankincense-oil

HOW CAN I TELL I’M BUYING THE REAL, PURE AND THERAPEUTIC-GRADE FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL

One of the most vital rules you must remember about essential oils is:  Not all essential oils are created equally.  In fact, many are worthless to your health and can even be potentially toxic due to synthetic chemicals and other additives.

In labeling essential oils, you have instances of ethical questions rather than legal ones, which may make it seem difficult to find the best oil.  However, if you want to ensure the highest quality of the oil you use, there are several ways to assess an essential oil’s potency and therapeutic quality:

1.   Check to see if certain testing has been performed

It’s ideal to purchase essential oils from a trusted company or manufacturer that performs gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) testing.

These testing techniques can analyze the constituents in oils.  Gas chromatography (GC) is a technique that provides a fingerprint of the oil and can reveal additives.  a mass spectrometer (MS) can measure the presence and quantity of chemical constituents that give essential oils their therapeutic benefits.

GC/MS testing can detect if two or more oils with similar chemical composition have been mixed together. If the oil has had certain chemical constituents removed or if an oil has been rectified (made with lower quality plant parts).  It will also reveal traces of solvents or mineral oils.

2.   Know Your Latin Names

One of the simplest things you can do to be certain you are purchasing the right essential oil is to read the label,  Many plant names around the world also have similar common names but come in different varieties that can produce different results.

If purchasing an unknown brand of essential oil, purchase by the Latin name, and always check for the correct botanical name.

For example, the Latin name of Lavender is L.angustifolia, also referred to as “true lavender”, is the preferred lavender for clinical aromatherapy – not lavandin (L.intermedia).  True Lavender has almost no camphor, whereas lavandin can have up to 40 percent.

3.   Check the price tag

There is an awareness that a price that is very low comparatively may indicate that oil is not sourced from the correct plant or part of the plant, or that it is diluted in a based oil or is otherwise adulterated.

4.   Trust your nose

The smell, taste, feel, and look of essential oils can provide important information about their quality ad whether or not it should be used.  In short, the more potent the fragrance, typically the more pure ad powerful the oil.

If you are new to the world of essential oils, it can seem overwhelming.  Ask around and find the most trusted brands from the qualified of a certified aromatherapist.  Click << HERE >>if you need help to purchase the therapeutic-grade essential oils.

A well-known reputation for producing high-quality oils will go far in the industry, but oils made by smaller distillers who use the proper techniques and test their oils for quality are excellent choices as well.
